Police

In “Policía,” the artist confronts us with a bold and provocative representation that dismantles conventional notions of authority, power, and the symbols associated with freedom or its restriction. This image is a central piece in the series “Anatomy of Freedom,” which dissects the complex relationships between the individual and structures of control.

The central figure, wearing a police cap that denotes authority and black clothing that gives them a powerful and enigmatic silhouette, looks directly at the viewer. This intense gaze challenges and questions. The iconography is complicated by the presence of a striking necklace with a pendant evoking a cannabis leaf, a symbol often associated with counterculture, personal freedom, and, in certain contexts, illegality or resistance to regulation.

The duality is palpable: the cap of the law in contrast to a symbol of dissent. The handcuffs she holds, instruments of restraint and control, seem to almost merge with her hands, blurring the line between the one who arrests and the one who could be arrested, or between oppression and possible liberation. The dark red background, dense and theatrical, accentuates the atmosphere of confrontation and drama, enveloping the figure in an aura of mystery and ambiguity.

“Policía” is not a simple criticism or praise; it is an invitation to unravel the contradictions inherent in freedom itself. Who defines freedom? Who grants or restricts it? And what happens when the symbols of power and resistance are intertwined in the same figure? The work forces us to examine how authority is exercised and how the individual navigates, negotiates, and sometimes subverts established norms in their constant search for autonomy. It is a portrait of the latent tension in the “anatomy” of our societies and of freedom itself.
